Spending time outdoors is good for all ages, including seniors. It’s important to make being outside a priority when the weather is nice. Even a trip to an indoor function has some health benefits. Of course, you want to keep COVID and summer safety in mind. Warm weather can increase the risk of dehydration, heatstroke, and other health risks. Read about some simple, yet fun activities for everyone to enjoy!
Discover Nature
What’s more enjoyable than some catch and release fishing? Pack lunch and a chair and cast a rod from a pier, a riverbank, or pond. There are also sportsman clubs that have ponds to fish in. Not a fan of fishing? A picnic or a beach trip will do just as good for enjoying the outdoors. Gather some friends and family and enjoy the breeze in your hair. Just pack that sunscreen!
Catch an Event
Museums and galleries have activities for seniors. Stroll your downtown or check a community calendar to see what’s going on in your area. Maybe you’d like a local sporting event? Many stadiums offer discounts for senior citizens. Finally, flea markets are interesting and fun, you never know what you’ll find! Check one out if you can.
Budget-friendly Fun
There’s always something to do, even when you don’t want to spend too much. Check out the mall in town; you’re guaranteed to see or learn something new. Not looking to do a lot of walking? Pick up a kite and watch it fly! It’s also a fun activity to do with family. An activity you can do from home is yard games, like a good old beanbag toss, horseshoes, croquet, shuffleboard, or bocce.
Volunteer
Do you like to read? Visit the library, see if they have a way for you to contribute positively. They usually do. This can be reading a Children’s Story Time or seasonal events. Maybe you have a skill to teach, other people would love to learn what you know best. Your local community center may be a good place to start.
Summer is a great time for seniors to move around, learn, challenge their brain, and engage their senses. So smell the roses, enjoy your summer, be safe and have fun!
